Em 1801, foi descoberto Ceres. Considerado um planeta até meio do século XIX, é hoje em dia designado como asteróide (o maior da Cintura Principal, entre Marte e Júpiter), mas também como planeta-anão, desde a criação dessa categoria em 2006. Ceres foi visitado de 2015 a 2018 pela sonda Dawn, que recolheu dados e imagens deste objecto, actualmente considerado um protoplaneta que sobreviveu ao período de acreção planetária no início da história do Sistema Solar.

On this day in 1801, Ceres was discovered. It was considered a planet for half of the 19^th century, and is now classified as an asteroid (the largest in the Main Belt, between Mars and Jupiter), and also as a dwarf planet, since that category was created in 2006. Ceres was orbited between 2015 and 2018 by Dawn, a space probe that collected data and images of this object, thought to be a protoplanet that somehow survived the accretion period in the early stages of the Solar System.
